                    These two sets of figures may sound like they have nothing to do with each other. But maybe they are flip sides of the same cultural phenomenon, and it’s not that we’re getting less religious, but that some of that spiritual energy is being re-channelled into gyms. Could it be fitness clubs that are becoming the modern gathering places, filling the void left by traditional spaces like churches?

                    Certainly, many in both the religious and gym worlds acknowledge common themes and flavours.

                    Perhaps this is clearest in disciplines like yoga, which are physical fitness practices but offer spiritual and mental health benefits as well. The spiritual benefits are often cited as increased awareness and mindfulness. Doctors often say yoga improves mental clarity and calmness, and body awareness, relieves chronic stress patterns, relaxes the mind, centers attention, and sharpens concentration. 

                    In fact, many of the benefits that religious people claim they get from regular worship.

                    The regularity, the structure of a workout, the emphasis on improving oneself, and the shutting out of other streams of thought so you can concentrate on something singular are all common themes between religion, churches, exercises and gyms.                     New year, new resolutions: how gym owners can make the January boom last

                    Every January, gyms around the world come alive. The energy is contagious: treadmills whirring, weights clinking, and yoga mats laid out for packed classes. It’s a season of New Year resolutions, implementing fresh starts, and an equally exciting time for gym owners. Membership numbers often climb by as much as 12% as people flood in, determined to honor their New Year’s resolutions.

                    But behind the burst of energy lies a deeper challenge. While 44% of these new members say they join a gym to stay fit, many lose momentum within weeks. This presents a critical question for gym owners: how can they turn the January spike into a loyal, thriving community that lasts all year? And how can they go from empty machines to lasting relationships?

                    Motivation vs. momentum

                    To understand how best to do this it’s helpful to categorise new sign-ups into different categories of motivation. The highly motivated, the moderately motivated and the undermotivated. You won’t necessarily know what category they fall into yet, unless they are doing coaching, but here’s where establishing goals can be as useful for you as it is for them.

                    As people meet, fail, and succeed at their various goals, as a gym manager, you can get a sense of who they are and also whether they will be candidates for taking on coaching.


                    The people joining in January windfall are mainly what you’d call “moderately motivated.” And since they comprise half of the client base, our primary focus is guiding them past the initial excitement and into lasting habits.

                    Engaging the moderately motivated members

                    The moderately motivated type of client generally doesn’t do much outside the facility, and typically, if they’ve taken on any coaching, they’ll only respond to between half and a quarter of the requests made of them. 

                    The key to keeping them engaged with the gym is to offer to create a set of realistic goals they are looking to achieve and establish this at the start of their membership.

                    Creating realistic goals is vital with this group, as they don’t have masses of resilience in the face of obstacles. But If they are signing up for coaching, it’s worth remembering that this type of client is the one that coaching can do most for.

                    While a highly motivated client will achieve most of their goals on their own, and an unmotivated one will achieve very few, keeping these moderates engaged is the key to building on your January boom.

                    1. Create a warm, welcoming environment

                    Offer orientation sessions or host a “New Year Kickoff” event to help them get comfortable. Make sure you take the time to establish clear, realistic goals and offer to hold them accountable for these goals. This accountability will help members build habits, not just hope.

                    So are your physical trainers keeping track of who is where on their goals? Offer beginner-friendly programs like a “30-Day Fitness Starter Challenge,” focusing on consistency over perfection. 

                    Small wins early on can build confidence and a feeling that they can make a positive impact on their health and wellbeing.

                    Another idea? Implement an accountability partner program where members check in with each other regularly. These programs create a sense of responsibility and can reignite motivation, especially when the initial spark starts to fade.
